Exeter College, Oxford | A brief overview
Exeter College (in full- The Rector and Scholars of Exeter College in the University of Oxford) is the fourth-oldest constituent college of the University of Oxford in England.
Founded in 1314, the college is located on Turl Street as a school for clergymen by Devon-born Bishop of Exeter Walter de Stapledon. Exeter was popular with the sons of Devonshire gentry during its establishment, but it has since become associated with a much broader range of notable alumni, including Raymond Raikes, William Morris, J. R. R. Tolkien, Richard Burton, Roger Bannister, Alan Bennett, and Philip Pullman.
In Philip Pullman’s novel trilogy, His Dark Materials, Exeter College serves as the inspiration for the fictional Jordan College. The college was a filming location for the 2007 film adaptation of the first novel, The Golden Compass (originally Northern Lights).
Inspector Morse’s final episode, based on the novel The Remorseful Day, was shot in the college chapel and Front Quadrangle.
Exeter is one of the smaller Oxford colleges and is famous for its close-knit student body. Turl Street houses first-year undergraduates, and there is a dedicated graduate housing for the college on Iffley Road.
As the university’s fourth oldest college, a certain emphasis is on tradition, particularly during special occasions such as the annual Burns Night, a dinner in honor of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, which features a traditional meal of haggis.
