Humber College, Canada’s largest polytechnic, provides its students with theoretical and practical training to help them prepare for real-world job scenarios. This College, founded in 1967 as an Applied Arts and Technology college, has grown from a few hundred students to a family of over 33,000 full-time students. Humber had grown into a comprehensive postsecondary institution by the 1970s, offering polytechnic education through applied arts, business, creative arts, health sciences, human studies, and technology.

History

Gordon Wragg, its first president founded Humber in 1967. On Monday, September 11, 1967, the first new section of Humber college opened at James S. Bell elementary school, a public school on Lake Shore Boulevard West. The Lakeshore Campus was established in Etobicoke with additional manpower retraining programs on Queen Elizabeth Way.

North Campus was officially opened in November 1968 by Etobicoke mayor Edward A. Horton and York mayor Jack Moulton. Student enrollment rapidly increased in the early 1970s, prompting Humber to expand its business and technology programs on both the North and Lakeshore campuses. Humber college had the province’s largest number of business students.

In the early 1970s, three-year co-op programs in various technology and business programs were developed. With over 27,000 full-time and 50,000 part-time students, Humber became Canada’s largest college.

Campus

North Campus, Lakeshore Campus, and Orangeville Campus are the three campuses of Humber college. North Campus and Lakeshore Campus are the two main campuses.

The North Campus is in northwest Toronto, adjacent to the Humber River; the Lakeshore Campus is in the west end of Toronto, and the Orangeville Campus is in Dufferin County.

The college provides more than 220 courses from six academic faculties available on these campuses.

• The faculty of liberal arts & sciences
• The faculty of media & creative arts
• The faculty of social & community services.

Humber north campus

The Humber North Campus, located in northwest Toronto (formerly Etobicoke) and adjacent to the Humber River, has approximately 20,000 full-time and 57,000 part-time students, with 1,000 living on campus.

Full-time and part-time programs in Business, Applied Technology, Health Sciences, Media Studies, Liberal Arts, Hospitality, and Tourism are available on campus. The Funeral Service Education program, one of only two in the province, is located on North Campus.

Humber Lakeshore Campus

Humber’s Lakeshore Campus in New Toronto, located along the shores of Lake Ontario at Kipling and Lake Shore Blvd., has approximately 7,200 full-time students, 400 of whom live on campus.

The Lakeshore Campus is located in Toronto’s west-end New Toronto neighborhood, on the large grounds of the former Lakeshore psychiatric hospital and Lakeshore teachers college.

Humber College pledged to keep the historic site in good condition and to improve its park-like setting as an asset to the Southern Etobicoke community when it leased it. The campus now consists of several cottage buildings and the more modern and recently renovated Lakeshore Teachers College facilities, which were extensively remodeled in the early 1980s.

Humber College campuses provide housing and other amenities such as a library, athletic facilities like an indoor pool, a sauna, a fully operational spa, eating and dining facilities, and so on. These facilities not only make life easier, but they also aid in community building and networking. There are also 52 student clubs, 7 academic support centers, 2 healthcare and counseling centers, a community radio station, and other amenities.

The college opened the Learning Resource Commons (LRC) in 2015 as a hub for student services.

Humber College admits over 33,000 full-time students, 23,000 part-time and continuing students, and 1,800 apprenticeship students. It produces over 10,000 graduates annually, and 79% of the programs offer work-placement opportunities.
