An overview of Brock university

Brock University is well known for its campus environment and courses.

Established in 1964, Brock University is Canada’s leading postsecondary institution. Years of planning and fundraising resulted in the establishment of this public university. Brock University, located in the historic Niagara region, has 19,000 students in seven faculties. It has 130 programs to choose from. The University offers 70 undergraduate programs and 50 graduate programs. International students make up 30% of Brock University’s student body, which totals 2,584 students.

Brock University’s faculties include the Faculty of Applied Health Sciences, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, Social Sciences, and the Goodman School of Business. Accountancy, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Computer Sciences, Geography, and other disciplines.

History

Located in St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada, Brock University is Canada’s only university based in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve on the Niagara Escarpment in the heart of the Niagara Peninsula. The university’s name is derived from Maj.-General Sir Isaac Brock. He was in charge of defending Upper Canada against the US during the war of 1812.

The Brock University Founders’ Committee, chaired by Arthur Schmon, invited Dr. James A. Gibson to become the university’s founding president in 1963. The Brock University Act, passed by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 1964, established the university.

When the university first opened in September 1964, Classes were held at the St. Paul Street United Church in downtown St. Catharines for 13 weeks until the Glenridge Campus renovation occurred. Officially opened on October 19, 1964, The Glenridge campus of Brock University was operating with Gibson as the university’s founding president. Gibson was honored in 1996 when Brock University named its library after him. In 1967, Richard L. Hearn was appointed the university’s first chancellor.

Major-General Sir Isaac Brock, who commanded the British and Canadian forces during the war of 1812, is the namesake of Brock University. Although the British and Canadian forces eventually won, Brock was killed during the Battle of Queenston Heights in 1812, which was fought 20 kilometers (12 miles) from the current site of the campus.

Surgite! (Latin for ‘push on’) is said to have been his last words, and it is now the university’s motto. 

Campus

There are two campuses, one of which is the main campus, St. Catharine and the Hamilton campus is the other. The university is relocating the Hamilton campus to Burlington to better serve students and the community.

Arthur Schmon Tower

The Arthur Schmon Tower, built in 1968, houses the university’s administrative offices.

Schmon was the driving force behind establishing a university on the Niagara peninsula, serving as chairman of the Brock University Founders’ Committee in 1962.

Their brutalist architecture distinguishes the Schmon Tower and the surrounding Thistle Complex.

The Schmon Tower also houses the James A. Gibson Library, named after the university’s founding president, James Alexander Gibson, which serves as the university’s academic library and is a member of the Canadian Association of Research Libraries.

The Matheson Learning Commons, which includes computer workstations, study rooms, multimedia classrooms, and the library’s circulation and information services, is located on the library’s main floor.

Mackenzie Chown complex

Canadian architect Raymond Moriyama designed the Mackenzie Chown complex and served as Brock University’s Chancellor. It primarily houses seminar rooms and science laboratories. The Pond inlet convention space and the Map, Data & GIS Library are also in the Mackenzie Chown Complex.

It was named after Mackenzie Chown, a former mayor of St. Catharines. He served as chairman of the Brock Board of Trustees and the fundraising committee for the Complex’s new science laboratory building.

Hamilton campus

Brock University also operates a campus in Hamilton, Ontario. The Faculty of Education, specifically the Teacher Education Department and Graduate Studies in Education and Continuing Education, are the primary users of this facility.

The Hamilton campus opened its doors on November 2, 2000. It is a campus with computer labs, an Instructional Resource Center/Library, a gymnasium, large classrooms, full and part-time faculty office space, food services, conference facilities, a board room, and green spaces within its courtyards and surrounding lawns.

There are other additions to the university, like the Cairns complex, Walker complex, and the plaza building.

Courses

The university has seven academic faculties that offer more than 70 undergraduate and nearly 50 graduate degrees- Applied Health Sciences, Education, Humanities, Mathematics and Science, Social Sciences, Graduate Studies, and the Goodman School of Business.

Brock has 13 Canada Research Chairs and ranks among the top five Ontario universities in the number of 3M National Teaching Fellows.

Brock assists people in leading fulfilling lives. For example, its Medical Sciences program prepares students for further studies in medicine, physiotherapy, and other health professions. Child and Youth Studies, Oenology and Viticulture, Digital Humanities, Teacher Education, Co-op Accounting, and its successful Sport Management program are among its other standout programs.

Brock is a pioneer in experiential education. Its Co-op, Career, and Experiential Education department, one of the most innovative in Canada, assists over 2,500 co-op students in finding appropriate employment. Every student participates in high-quality experiential learning opportunities. Brock graduates have a 95% employment rate even two years after graduation.
