Griffith University believes in doing things differently
The teaching and research at Griffith University focuses on addressing the most pressing social and environmental issues of our time since 1975. That mission is even more relevant today.
Griffith is driven by social and environmental responsibility, from pioneering in teaching modern Asian studies and environmental science to its long-standing support for ‘First Peoples’, social justice, and sustainable practices.
Design of Griffith’s degrees, which consistently rank in the top 2% of universities worldwide, have industry, the future, and social impact in mind. Its community of over 55,000 students spans five campuses in South East Queensland, as well as its digital campus, and it gets support from a global alumni network of over 200,000 graduates.
Griffith believes the world can and should be a better place for everyone. By assisting thousands of different people in creating a brighter future for themselves, it is contributing to a brighter future for all.
History
Nathan’s 174 hectares (430 acres) of natural bushland were set aside for a new university campus in 1965. Originally, the site was to be part of the University of Queensland, which had a high demand for humanities and social sciences.
By 1970, the Queensland Government had requested that Theodor Bray, who later got the title Sir Theodor Bray establish a second and third tertiary institution for Brisbane and the state. After months of debate, the government announced on December 24, 1970, that Bray would chair a committee tasked with establishing Griffith University.
The Queensland Government established and recognized Griffith University on September 30, 1971, with the passage of the Assent to Griffith University Act 1971.
Griffith University began teaching 451 students in four schools on March 5, 1975. Australian environmental studies, humanities, modern Asian studies, and science were the study areas offered then. The university’s course design and research approaches were ‘problem-based’ rather than disciplinary.
