Campuses
MacEwan University began in a number of small storefront-style campuses in Edmonton. Old Scona School, the Worker’s Compensation Board (WCB) building, 7th Street Plaza, and the former Dominion Store in Cromdale were among the facilities, with offices and administration housed in the Canada Trust building. Don Getty’s provincial government committed $100 million in 1988 to the construction of the City Centre Campus, which was Alberta Advanced Education and Technology’s largest single capital project in its history at the time.
City Centre Campus
City Centre Campus construction began in 1991 on the previous site of the Canadian National rail yards that lie on the northern outskirts of the city’s downtown core. CN donated the property.
The Board of Governors of MacEwan University approved a plan in September 2009 to relocate all the university’s operations, which span across four campuses at the time, to the main City Centre Campus. The University Service Centre opened in April 2011 as the first step in this consolidation. Opened in the fall of 2017, the new Centre for Arts and Culture began construction in 2014 on the west end of the City Centre Campus.
City Centre Campus houses the majority of MacEwan’s degree programs. University courses, diplomas, and certificates in health, human services, and business are also available on campus. City Centre Campus also houses the majority of the university’s administration. The main complex’s south entrance is within the center-most of three groups of concrete spires, which also houses a public clock.
