History of UCC
Queen’s College, Cork, was established under legislation that allowed Queen Victoria to fund new colleges for the ‘Advancement of Learning in Ireland.’ On December 30, 1845, the three colleges of Belfast, Cork, and Galway were incorporated under the authority of this statute.
The college was established in 1849 with 23 professors and 181 students; the three initial faculties were medicine, arts, and law. The college was absorbed into the Queen’s University of Ireland a year later.
The original location for the college was considered ideal since it was thought to have a connection with Cork’s patron saint, Saint Finbarr. His monastery and school of learning were nearby at Gill Abbey Rock.
This connection is also represented in the college motto, ‘Where Finbarr Taught, Let Munster Learn.’
The site, adjacent to Gillabbey and overlooking the Lee Valley, was chosen in 1846. Sir Thomas Deane (1792-1871) and Benjamin Woodward (1816-1861) designed and built the Tudor Gothic quadrangle and early campus structures. Queen’s College Cork was founded in November 1849, with other buildings built later, including the Medical/Windle Building in the 1860s.
The Irish Universities Act (1908) established the National University of Ireland, consisting of the three constituent colleges of Dublin, Cork, and Galway, and the college was designated as University College Cork.
University College Cork-campus
The dynamic and sophisticated campus is in scenic Cork, where students get a chance to learn by combining heritage with a modern lifestyle. It provides students with the benefits of a bustling, energetic, and cosmopolitan metropolis.
Cork is packed with parks, galleries, shops, restaurants, theatres, and historic structures, so students will never be bored. The city and university collaborate closely to provide students with a diverse academic and extracurricular experience.
It’s the ideal environment for success and growth!
As of 2017, the university has implemented a program to enhance space across its campuses, which includes building a ‘student hub’ to support academic strategy, adding 600 new student housing spaces, and developing an outdoor sports complex.
The North Mall Campus, the former North Mall Distillery, is home to the School of Biological, Earth, and Environmental Sciences.
Sir Howard Grubb established the Crawford Observatory on the university grounds in 1880, and the institution reopened it in 2006. Grubb, the son of Dublin’s Grubb telescope manufacturing family, developed and built the observatory’s astronomical instruments.
The university financed substantial restoration and conservation of the edifice and the three primary telescopes, the Equatorial, Transit Circle, and Sidereostatic.
