History
Founded in 1968, Cañada College is located in Redwood City, California. The college is on 131 acres of land in the city’s western outskirts, alongside the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains. Cañada College has an open admission policy that allows high school graduates or GED holders to apply.
Campus
The ‘bond issue victory’ paved the way for the immediate acquisition of the current College of San Mateo campus and funds for purchasing a 111-acre (45-hectare) site in San Bruno west of Skyline Boulevard and south of Sharp Park Road. In 1962, the third site of 131 acres was purchased west of the Farm Hill subdivision on the Redwood City-Woodside line.
The current San Mateo campus opened in 1963, followed by Cañada College in 1968 and Skyline College, San Bruno, in 1969. Cañada and Skyline were built in large part with funds from a second bond issue of $12.8 million, which district voters approved in March 1964.
The architects and builders completed Cañada’s educational and architectural planning in 1964-66, with the theory that the design of the first phase for at least 2,000 students should be to allow for the eventual expansion to 8,000-day students. Grading the site began in 1966, and awarding the contract for building construction began in April 1967. In September 1968, the college started its first classes for 2,000 students.
