Curtin University | Make tomorrow better
Founded in 1966, Curtin University was known as the Western Australian Institute of Technology. The tertiary programs of Perth Technical College, which started in 1900, formed its nucleus. Chosen in 1962, The Bentley campus officially opened in 1966. The first pupils began attending classes the following year. Curtin University is a member of the Australian Technology Network. It is a member of the Australian Technology Network. The University undertakes research in a wide range of academic and applied fields. Curtin is the only Western Australian university whose students have received the Postgraduate Student Gold Medal from the Australian Institute of Nuclear Science and Engineering as of 2020.
Curtin University – Campuses
The University’s main campus is in Bentley, Western Australia, around 6 kilometers southeast of Perth’s central business district. It offers three minor off-campus sites in the Perth metropolitan area. The Graduate School of Business is in Perth’s central business district’s renovated former Government Printing Office. In contrast, the law school is on Murray Street in the old Public Health Department and Chief Secretary’s building, which is on the State Register of Heritage Places.
Curtin has campuses outside of Perth, the largest of which is the Western Australian School of Mines in Kalgoorlie, as well as a handful of micro-campuses in Esperance, Margaret River, and Geraldton. Geraldton offers only one course: nursing.

Rankings
Academic Ranking of World Universities for 2022 places Curtin University in the top 1% of universities worldwide. QS World University Rankings by Subject for 2021, Curtin University is second in the world for Mineral & Mining Engineering. According to the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia results, 95% of their research output was rated world-class.
Six of the ten major global rankings have declared Curtin University a “Top 10 Australia University” (ARWU, U.S. News, CWUR, Leiden, RUR, URAP). Curtin is 160th internationally and 10th nationally in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Global Universities Rankings for 2023. Curtin University is in the top 1% of universities worldwide and 9th in Australia in the 2022 Academic Ranking of World Universities.
Curtin University also obtained its highest-ever ranking in the annual QS World University Rankings, advancing to 193rd in the 2023 edition. Based on the 2022 QS World University Rankings by subject, it was the second worldwide for Engineering – Mineral & Mining and fifth in Australia for Architecture. Curtin’s Creative Writing faculty and alumni have been honored with the Miles Franklin Award seven times.
Its Tourism & Hospitality program was in the top 50 globally in 2021, third in Australia, and first in Western Australia (ShanghaiRanking). Curtin’s Nursing course is at 11th position in Australia in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021, while Psychology at Curtin is 8th nationally in the prestigious 2021 Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject.
