History

The University of Chester was founded in 1839 by pioneers such as 19th-century prime ministers William Gladstone and the Earl of Derby and a future Archbishop of Canterbury.

The original buildings of the institution were the first in the country to be purpose-built for teacher professional development. From February 1840, the first cohort of ten male student teachers was taught in temporary premises in Nicholas Street until increasing student numbers forced a move to additional temporary premises in Bridge Street later that year. The Dean and Chapter of Chester Cathedral donated land adjacent to Parkgate Road in response to the need for a permanent location. The new facilities opened in 1842 for the 50 student teachers and their school pupils.

The Parkgate Road Campus was later developed to meet the needs of students, and the University continues to provide higher education in this location and other locations throughout the city and beyond.

Campus

The University of Chester has five campuses in and around Chester. Students can choose from a variety of courses at the Exton Park campus. It has food outlets, a student union, a library, and fitness facilities such as a gym, swimming pool, running track, and so on.

The university’s main campus is Exton Park, located on a 32-acre site on Parkgate Road. Kingsway, the Creative Campus, is an arts and media site that houses a variety of exceptional art, design, and performance-based facilities.

The Queen’s Park campus houses the University’s Business School and is a multi-million-pound corporate hub. The Hammond campus is a performing arts center with studios for dance and drama, a music suite with a recording studio, practice rooms, and a 420-seat theatre.

The Wheeler campus is home to undergraduate and postgraduate Health and Social Care, Education, Children’s Services, and Law programs.

Courses

The university provides flexible study options for students who want to study while working. Education qualifications are still necessary, but only a small part of the 420-course combinations are available. Throughout the twentieth century, the institution steadily increased its student population and various courses, ranging from Animation to Zoo Management.

The University of Chester now has over 1,700 staff and approximately 20,000 students from the United Kingdom, Europe, and other countries, including the United States, India, China, Nigeria, Turkey, Uganda, Pakistan, Ghana, Bangladesh, Qatar, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia.

Aside from undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, a new set of foundation and apprenticeship degrees combines traditional university study with on-the-job training.

MPhil and Ph.D. degrees are a well-established and expanding area of activity, with the University gaining the authority to award its research degrees in 2007. The emphasis is very much on research that has both economic and cultural benefits, and the University provides consultancy support in a variety of areas of expertise.
