About the IAS Examination
The Indian Administrative Service examinations are administered by the Union Public Service Commission. The UPSC Civil Service Exam is held on an annual basis at the national level and is formally known as the UPSC Civil Service Exam.
The three stages of the IAS exam are-

- IAS Mains
- UPSC Personality Test (IAS Interview)
During the three rounds of the IAS test, the commission evaluates applicants’ expertise in a wide range of subjects, from aptitude to general studies.
The IAS (UPSC CSE) 2022 tests are open to candidates who have a bachelor’s degree from a recognized university and are between the ages of 21 and 30.
IAS 2022 Exam Pattern
There are three stages to the IAS Exam-
- Preliminary
- Main
- Interview
The UPSC uses it to select applicants for positions in the IAS, IPS, IFS, and other related services. Candidates who pass all three stages are eligible to work for the Indian government. It is mandatory to clear each stage, in case you fail to do so, you are disqualified from the exam.

IAS (UPSC CSE) Prelims 2022
The two exams comprise-
- The Civil Service Aptitude Test (CSAT)
- The IAS Prelims Test (General Studies)
While the CSAT is a qualifying exam, the selection for UPSC Mains is determined by candidates’ performance on the General Studies test. It shows that the Prelims cutoff will also be based on candidates’ performance in the General Studies Paper.
In Prelims, there is a negative marking for incorrect answers. One-third of the marks for that question will be deducted if the answer is incorrect. However, there are no negative markings if candidates’ do not attempt a particular question.

IAS (UPSC CSE) 2022 Mains
There are 2 types of papers in the IAS mains exam-
- Qualifying
- Merit-ranking
Paper A and Paper B, which will qualify in nature, are the language and English papers, respectively. The grades you receive on these papers will not be included in the grades that determine your rank. The remaining articles are judged on their own merits.

Language Papers for IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains: Indian Language and English Syllabus
In the IAS (UPSC CSE) Mains exam 2022, two language papers are qualifying in character. As a result, to qualify, applicants must get a score of at least 25% in both.
- One essay question is worth 100 marks, and applicants must choose one of the topics provided.
- There are 60 marks available for reading comprehension.
- Precis writing for 60 marks: Answers must be written in a distinct grid structure.
- Translation from English to the chosen language. This segment is worth 20 marks.
- The translation from the selected language to English is worth 20 marks.
- The grammar & basic language section contains a total of 40 marks (synonyms, sentence correction, etc.)
Essay Paper for IAS (UPSC CSE) 2022 Mains
The essay paper is worth 250 marks out of a total of 1250 marks. It accounts for 12.5% of the total score. The essay should be between 1000 and 1200 words long.
