More Countries Noticing Higher TOEFL Scores From Indians

Recent trends have indicated a growing interest among Indian TOEFL test takers in pursuing education in countries such as Singapore, Australia, France, and Sweden. This insight comes directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

Since 2017, the primary countries of choice for TOEFL participants from India have been the United States, followed by Canada. Until 2019, Germany occupied the third position, while the UK was in the fourth. Interestingly, these positions swapped post-2020.

Sachin Jain, ETS India and South Asia’s Country Manager, commented, “The preferred countries for Indian TOEFL aspirants have remained relatively stable in recent years. But aside from these primary destinations, we’re observing rising traction towards nations like Singapore, Australia, France, and Sweden.”

Changing Dynamics and Intentions

ETS, located in Princeton and responsible for TOEFL and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), believes this trend mirrors evolving global educational desires.

Jain further explained that the proportion of Indians utilizing TOEFL for overseas secondary education and certifications has grown progressively. Conversely, the number attempting the test for migration has decreased.

Exclusive data reveals that in 2022, 7.77% of Indian participants took the test for licensure, certification, or secondary school admissions abroad, up from 5.83% in 2021. However, those taking the test for work or immigration fell from 8.19% in 2021 to 7.22% in 2022.

Additionally, the portion of Indians attending graduate or postgraduate programs via TOEFL has increased from 70.84% in 2021 to 71.87% in 2022.

TOEFL Examination Innovations

A significant 53% growth in Indian candidates was noted in 2021 compared to its preceding year, and 2022 observed a 59% rise from 2021’s figures.

Cities such as New Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Gurugram, Chennai, Kolkata, and Ahmedabad have seen the most test participants from India.

ETS, aiming for an enhanced test-taking experience, introduced several modifications to the TOEFL examination starting July 26. This includes shortening the test duration and allowing test-takers to view their official scores immediately after completion.
