About the Royal Military College of Canada

The Dominion Government, led by Alexander Mackenzie, passed legislation in Parliament in 1874 to establish a military college ‘for the purpose of providing a complete education in all branches of military tactics, fortification, engineering, and general scientific knowledge in subjects connected with and necessary to a thorough knowledge of the military profession.’ The Military College of Canada welcomed its first class of eighteen officer cadets on June 1, 1876. RMC | An overview

RMC offers 20 exceptional undergraduate programs to 1,200 students, each with a core curriculum directly related to the profession of arms.

RMC is a notable national institution that upholds the tradition, distinguishing RMC from other Canadian universities. It produces military leaders who are ready to serve with distinction and graduates who have exposure to military ethos. RMC trains students with the skill sets necessary for success as leaders representing Canada internationally.

RMC’s campus is home to breakthrough research facilities such as a nuclear reactor, wind tunnels, an anechoic chamber, an observatory, an ammunition lab, a civil engineering lab, and a cyber lab, to name a few. Some of the research is sensitive or classified. RMC frequently carries out the research directly to support operations.

The college offers university education at a distance to hundreds of military and civilian members of the Department of National Defence. RMC is equally proud of its distinctive and well-regarded graduate programs in the arts, sciences, and engineering, which are available to both military and civilian students.

RMC has 67 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. The college provides 19 undergraduate programs, 34 graduate programs, and 14 doctoral programs in Arts, Science, and Engineering. Campus life at RMC

Point Frederick, a 101-acre peninsula in Kingston, Ontario, is home to the Royal Military College of Canada. The college campus is a combination of historic buildings with modern academic, athletic, and dormitory facilities.

• The campus contains several National Historic Sites of Canada, including the Point Frederick Buildings NHSC and Fort Frederick (Kingston, Ontario, a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
• Academic, Bilingualism, Military, and Athletic are the four components of campus life at the Royal Military College.
• RMC provides on-campus housing to all cadets. There is a Cadet Mess where they can train Cadet Wing in the customs and practices of a Service Mess.
• The Massey Library houses approximately 250,000 books, 1,800 audio-visual items, and 1,200 English and French periodicals.
• The Kingston Military Community Sports Centre (KMCSC), located very close to the College, has recreational facilities, including an indoor swimming pool and ice rink.
• On campus, RMC also has a small store where cadets can buy personal items, souvenirs, and snacks.

Residence

The Royal Military College of Canada provides all ROTP and RETP cadets with on-campus housing. Officer cadets in their fourth year have single rooms. Other senior cadets are assigned single rooms based on space availability. Officer cadets in their first year stay in double rooms.

• RMC has six dormitories similar to those you find at most universities and provides all necessities.
• All residences are co-ed. Married or common-law cadets may request permission to live out.
• Dining is available on-campus, as is the Cadet Mess, which houses the Cadet Wing’s training facilities.
