University of Houston | Third-largest university in Texas

Established in 1927, the University of Houston is the third-biggest public research university in Texas and the largest in Houston; it offers undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs. U.H. has sizeable educational facilities in Sugar Land and Katy and its main campus in Houston. The University of Houston (U.H.) – An overview

The University of Houston is honored to hold the designations of Hispanic-serving Institution (HSI) and Asian American and Native American and Pacific Islander-serving Institution (AANAPISI). It symbolizes its dedication to fostering a university environment devoted to the success of students from diverse backgrounds. With over 47,000 students enrolled in over 276 undergraduate and graduate programs in Fall 2021, U.H. had over 8,400 students residing in nine residential communities. Campus life at U.H. is active and exciting, with more than 445 officially recognized student groups and 17 NCAA Division 1 intercollegiate sports teams. With no ethnic majority on campus and students from more than 130 different countries, U.H.’s student body is the second most diverse in the U.S. among research universities.

History

Since the university’s founding in 1927, when teacher preparation was its main priority, it has had a great tradition of academic distinction. Houston Junior College was the college’s name at the time, and San Jacinto High School was the location for classes.

As they progressed through the years, it became the University of Houston in 1934. The first structure was completed in 1939, two years after the college had acquired the property for a permanent site. The college began one of its many illustrious traditions by designating the cougar, subsequently known as Shasta, as its official mascot in 1947. In 1963, the university became a state-run institution, and in 1977 it joined the recently established University of Houston System.

The University of Houston fosters community and creates fun with various time-honored traditions, from a cute feline to an all-campus fiesta. Most individual institutions also have their customs, from the annual Elizabeth D. Rockwell Lecture on Ethics and Leadership at the Hobby School of Public Affairs to Wolffest, when students operate pop-up food stands over three days.

Rankings

The U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges 2021 rankings place the University of Houston among the top schools in the country in several areas. U.H. was among the top 50 “Top Performers for Social Mobility,” as well as among the “Top Public Schools” and “Best Value Schools” categories.

U.H. rose nine ranks to No. 176 overall among the best national universities. Schools in this category are dedicated to conducting ground-breaking research and provide a comprehensive variety of undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degrees. The Cullen College of Engineering (No. 79), the C.T. Bauer College of Business (No. 81 overall, No. 58 in accounting), and the Wolff Center for Entrepreneurship, the top 15-ranked program, are just a few of the undergraduate programs that have received recognition.
