History
The University of East London can trace its origins back to 1892. The newly formed County Borough of West Ham decided to establish a West Ham Technical Institute to serve the local community. According to John Passmore Edwards, who spoke at the building’s dedication ceremony, the institute was to be a ‘people’s university.’ The college offered science, engineering, and art courses. The University of London approves its internal degree programs in science and engineering.
It also had a women’s department.
As the demand for technical education grew in the 1930s and 1940s, Essex County Council established two other colleges in Walthamstow and Dagenham (South West Essex Technical College and South East Essex Technical College). In 1970, these three colleges (West Ham, Walthamstow, and Dagenham) merged as a higher education college merger to form the North East London Polytechnic.
Completed in 1982, buildings such as the Arthur Edwards building on the Stratford campus modernized and revitalized the campuses. The North East London Polytechnic became a higher education institution in 1988. In 1989, it was renamed the Polytechnic of East London.
