History

The Mechanics Institute was established in Rochester, New York, in 1885 by a group of local industrialists, including Captain Henry Lomb, a co-founder of Bausch & Lomb, and the Rochester Athenaeum, a struggling literary club founded in 1829 by Colonel Nathaniel Rochester and friends. At the time of the merger, the new institution was known as Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute (RAMI). 

The Mechanics Institute assumed the original charter of The Rochester Athenaeum in 1829 and was regarded as the remaining institution. From the merger until 1944, many of its employees—including students, administrators, and faculty—celebrated the previous Mechanics Institute’s 1885 founding charter and its prior name. The Athenaeum’s 1829 original charter was reinstated, the school’s name changed to Rochester Institute of Technology, and it expanded into a full-fledged research university in 1944.

Campuses

The main campus is 1,300 acres (5.3 km2) in size. Freshwater marsh and woodland predominately cover this landscape, creating an incredibly diverse wetland home to numerous rare plant species. The complex has 237 structures totaling 5.1 million square feet (474,000 m2). Due to the nearly widespread use of bricks in its construction—an estimated 15,710,693 bricks as of August 6, 2018, students earned the institution the semi-affectionate nickname ‘Brick City.’ The names of events like the yearly Brick City Homecoming reflect this namesake.

The Gordon Field House, a 160,000 square foot (15,000 square meters) two-story sporting complex, is located along the Quarter Mile. The Field House, which opened in 2004 and bore the names of Lucius “Bob” Gordon and his wife Marie, is a popular venue for campus and neighborhood events like concerts, career fairs, sporting events, graduations, and other occasions. The Hale-Andrews Student Life Center, Student Alumni Union, Ingle Auditorium, Clark Gymnasium, Frank Ritter Memorial Ice Arena, and Schmitt Interfaith Center are other amenities between the housing halls and academic buildings.

Park Point at RIT, formerly known as “College Town,” is an 80,000 square-foot (7,400 square meters) multi-use residential and commercial facility located in the northeastern area of the campus. Access from Park Point to the rest of the RIT campus is possible via a frequent bus service loop, multiple pedestrian routes connecting Park Point to the RIT Main Loop, and significant roads. RIT decided to lease Park Point to Wilmorite for 20 years, even though it initially intended to build more student housing. This was to avoid incurring additional costs because of the financial penalties involved with building on swampland.
