Overview of the University of Bristol
Founded in 1876, The University of Bristol is an open research university with significant financial support from the Wills and Fry families. Initially, the university had two professors and five lecturers teaching courses in 15 subjects, and classes began with only 99 students. The University of Bristol is known for being the first university in the United Kingdom to accept female students. The university joined forces with the Bristol Medical School in 1893 and the Merchant Venturers Technical College in 1909. This collaboration resulted in the establishment of well-known degree programs in the fields of engineering and health sciences.
History
The engineering department of the Merchant Venturers’ Technical College (founded as a school in 1595), which later became Bristol University’s engineering faculty, was the university’s earliest antecedent.
The university was also preceded by Bristol Medical School (1833) and University College, Bristol, founded in 1876, with only 99 students attending its first lecture.
The Wills, Fry, and Colston families, who made their fortunes in tobacco plantations, chocolate, and (via Edward Colston) the transatlantic slave trade, respectively, enabled the university to apply for a royal charter.
The royal charter was granted in May 1909, and the university welcomed 288 undergraduates and 400 other students in October 1909. The University College’s first chancellor was Henry Overton Wills III. The University College was the first in the country to admit women on the same basis as men. However, women were not permitted to take medical examinations until 1906.
Campus
The famous Avon Gorge serves as the campus’s residential halls, owned by George Oatley. After the UGC provided funds to the university, some new buildings were built on campus. Ralph Brentnall designed and built the new structures. The music department is designed in the British style. The campus is known for being close to restaurants, cafes, department stores, and many shops, providing students with all their needs. Students have a good time in Bristol, a vibrant city known for its art, culture, and nightlife.
