About Singapore University of Technology and Design
Singapore University of Technology and Design, founded in 2009, is a private institution affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The university and MIT work together on student exchange programs, undergraduate curriculum development, faculty visits for guest lectures, and the creation of the International Design Centre.

4D design approach
Design-and-maker-based learning is the cornerstone of their curriculum thanks to their future-focused pedagogy. Students work on design projects throughout their studies at SUTD. Each student would have participated in 20 to 30 significant design projects by the time they graduated.
SUTD refers to its multi-layered design methodology as the ‘4D Design Approach.’ Students begin with 1D design exercises where they apply and investigate ideas they have learned in a particular course and gradually go up to the 4D level.
Maker-based active learning
In addition to their 4D design approach, the curriculum intends to foster an intrinsic maker culture. Rather than lecture-based classes, SUTD frequently uses an experiential, ‘flipped classroom’ process, in which students learn ahead of time and then spend classroom time applying and exploring those concepts.
Open-ended, hands-on learning is another essential component that helps students integrate and reinforce what they’ve learned. These activities stimulate immersive, real-world work situations, and students are required to deliver a working prototype as a tangible outcome of their courses.
Interdisciplinary and collaborative culture
Problems in the real world don’t fit within one field cleanly, so solving them requires various skills. SUTD is organized around five multidisciplinary majors rather than typical degrees based on a particular area.
These include Engineering Product Development, Engineering Systems and Design, Architecture and Sustainable Design, Design and Artificial Intelligence, and Information Systems Technology and Design. Through a first year shared by all students, they gain a multidisciplinary foundation before specializing in one of the majors.
Eligibility
Here is a few eligibility criteria for international students-
- For admission into the university, you must have completed at least 12 years of general education or have taken the year 12 national/international examination in the year of application.
- Students who excel in Mathematics and the Sciences, such as Physics or Chemistry, are generally preferred.
- Applicants must submit IELTS, TOEFL, SAT, Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic), ACT, or C1 Advanced scores.
