University of Windsor – One of the oldest universities in Canada

History 

Established in 1857,  Assumption College, was a small Catholic liberal arts college. This was the original predecessor of the modern university of Windsor. In 1963, four colleges namely Essex College, Canterbury College, Iona College, and Holy Redeemer College, integrated with Assumption College to form the University of Windsor. On July 1, 1963, the University of Windsor became southwestern Ontario’s first autonomous degree-granting institution.

 The University of Windsor is one of the top public universities in Windsor, Canada. University of Windsor’s ranking is #751-800 in QS World University Rankings 2023.

Campuses

Located in Windsor, Canada’s “automotive capital”, the University of Windsor is at a prime location. It is across the border from Detroit and is a busy port of entry to and from the United States. It has the Ambassador Bridge to the west and the Detroit River to the north.

The campus covers 51 hectares (130 acres) (contiguous) in a residential neighborhood. The campus has an arboretum with most of the species from the Carolinian forest. The main campus is about a 10-minutes away from Downtown Windsor making it ideal for walking or biking. The Centre for Engineering Innovation is open to interested students for research and experiments.

Though only minutes from the main campus, UWindsor’s downtown campus has brought the School of Creative Arts to the Armouries Building, joining St. Clair College’s thriving Centre for the Arts and Mediaplex in energizing the downtown region. The Windsor Star building now houses the School of Social Work and the Centre for Executive and Professional Education. The former Armouries building went through major reconstruction and is now complete. It has preserved and restored the architectural elements of the building. It is now home to the School for Creative Arts. 

The CAW Student Centre is the main, all-encompassing center that caters to student needs. It houses the primary campus bookstore as well as a huge food court. Student Health Services, a dental office, counseling services, a photographer, a pharmacy, the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance (UWSA), a Multi-Faith Space, the campus community radio station CJAM-FM, and an information desk are all available at the CAW Centre. On certain days, a big public area adjacent to the food court is accessible for clubs and educational booths to set up shop. 

The St. Denis Centre, located on College Avenue at the south end of campus, is the students’ main athletic and recreational facility. There is a weight room, exercise equipment, and a swimming pool. The new South Campus Stadium built for the 2005 Pan American Junior Games is beside the St. Denis Centre and at the border of Huron Church Road.

Accommodation

On campus, students’ accommodations are in three housing halls.

First Year and Beyond First Year students (coming directly from High School) live in Alumni Hall. Alumni Hall is a suite-style house with co-ed floors and two bedrooms with a kitchenette and a three-piece bathroom. 

First-year undergraduate students live in Cartier Hall (coming directly from High School). Cartier Hall features co-ed floors, meaning two students share one room and four share one washroom.

Beyond First Year students live in Laurier Hall. Laurier Hall includes single rooms on levels that are either single-gender or co-ed.

The university also offers meal plans for its students. 

Academics

Windsor University has 190 undergraduate programs, 65 graduate programs, and six professional programs. With about 16,500 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate degrees, including professional schools such as Law, Business, Engineering, Education, Nursing, Human Kinetics, and Social Work. The new Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation, the campus’s largest capital project to date, opened in the fall of 2012 as a world-class innovation hub, complete with the most advanced classroom teaching technology, an Industrial Courtyard for collaborative work with the region, and 80 research labs.

With a 524 faculty, the student-faculty ratio for the University of Windsor is 26:1. 

The University of Windsor acceptance rate is 60%.
